
Why most infrared towel rails actually fail (and how we fixed it)
If you’ve ever had an infrared towel rail die on you, it probably didn’t happen because the heating element itself just “gave up.” It almost always happens at the connection point. When people talk about “factory-grade” quality, it sounds like corporate speak. But in this case, it’s actually about one specific thing: the seal where the lead wire meets the element.
The battle against heat and air
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. Like, really hot. Here’s the problem: if that seal is loose or made from some cheap silicone, it starts to leak. Oxygen and moisture sneak inside. Once that happens, the internal filaments start to oxidize and the insulation begins to crack. Eventually, the insulation burns out. Then you get a short circuit. Game over. A lot of cheap heaters just use basic glue. It works for a bit, but the constant heating and cooling makes that glue dry out and shrink. We do things differently. We use high-density, heat-resistant compounds that create a vacuum-tight bond. It stops the “breathing” effect—that annoying cycle where the heater basically sucks in moist air every time it cools down.
Getting the wiring right
Getting the lead-wire setup right is a bit of an art. You can’t just push a wire into a terminal and hope for the best. Thermal expansion will just push it right back out. We use a reinforced process that locks the wire in place both mechanically and chemically. It means the wires won’t fray or drift toward the hottest part of the element. You won’t find any melted insulation or copper that’s turned black from overheating. It just stays put.
One small catch
Because we’ve made the seal so tight and strong, it allows us to crank up the wattage without worrying about the wires melting. But there is a trade-off. That seal is rigid. You can’t just bend these wires at sharp angles right where they exit the element. If you kink the wire too close to the seal, you might crack it—and then you’re right back to the oxidation problem we talked about. Just give the wires a little bit of slack in your housing. Give them room to breathe, and they’ll last a lifetime.
