
Getting Your Sidel and Chumpower Lamps to Actually Play Nice
If you’ve spent any time on a production floor, you know the headache of trying to keep heat profiles consistent when you’re mixing and matching gear. It’s a slog. We wanted to fix that, so we built replacement lamps that bridge the gap between those old-school SBO systems and the newer Matrix series. If you’re running Chumpower blowers, these are designed to just work.
The “Will it Fit?” Part
The biggest pain with retrofitting is usually the physical stuff—the footprint and the electrical load. Nobody wants to spend their afternoon modifying lamp holders or ripping apart a control cabinet just to get a new bulb in. We matched the dimensions and connectors exactly. Whether you’re on an old SBO or a Matrix line, these just slide right into the sockets. No forcing, no fighting with the hardware. Just a clean fit. We also focused on high-voltage stability. Here’s the thing: when you push a lot of wattage through a short quartz tube, the electrodes tend to burn out way too fast. To stop that, we used a specific filament alloy that can handle those thermal spikes. It keeps the heat steady across the whole preform, which is exactly where you want it.
The Science Bit (Simplified)
These are short-wave infrared lamps. We used high-purity quartz for the envelope because it lets the IR transmission through without fighting it. But the real secret is the halogen gas fill. We optimized it to push evaporated tungsten back into the filament. It sounds technical, but all it really means is that the lamps don’t give up the ghost as quickly when you’re pushing them hard during rapid cycling. They just last longer.
A Quick Heads-Up on Your Oven
High-density IR lamps get things hot, and they do it fast. That’s great for your cycle times—you’ll see them drop. But there’s a catch. All that extra heat puts more pressure on your oven’s ventilation. If you’re swapping out low-spec lamps for these high-output ones,do yourself a favor and check your cooling fans. If your airflow is clogged or dusty, the ambient temperature in the oven will spike. That’s when you start seeing “pearling” or deformed preforms. A quick cleaning of the fans usually does the trick.
